Nigeria – our latest significant leap forward

Selfie time at Lafarge Holcim

This week was another significant milestone for AKD, having just concluded our first assignment in Nigeria and hence our first steps into the African market.

Earlier this year Akin Thomas was hosted by the British High Commission where he had an audience with Learning and Development and HR Managers from some of the top brands in Lagos. The target was to achieve our first commission in Nigeria by the end of 2015. Some people questioned why Nigeria. The reason are numerous, but none more than an emerging market with immense opportunities and people who have a real desire for learning.

In August we received a speculative call asking if we could help with a leadership conference, following the merger of Lafarge and Holcim in July. We provided some ideas and were commissioned to facilitate 2 days of their leadership conference. The new merger means 4 distinct businesses with very different operations now need to become a single brand and respond quickly to a very bullish competitor. Our role was to focus on team building and facilitating a range of exercises that supported the conference theme.

We have facilitated leadership conference before, but nothing compares to the energy, vibrancy and belief that we witnessed in this meeting. The feedback was that this was the best conference that they have convened and we are already working on the next phases of supporting Lafarge Holcim in their cultural transformation. A big thank you to everyone who participated.
